CSU Predicts Below-Average 2026 Atlantic Hurricane Season
US · Published Aug 6, 2026
Colorado State University (CSU) has released its final forecast for the 2026 Atlantic hurricane season, predicting significantly below-average activity.
The forecast attributes this to a strong El Niño event in the eastern Pacific, which is expected to suppress storm formation across the Atlantic basin.

Impact & Risks

The reduced hurricane activity forecast is good news for coastal regions along the Gulf of Mexico, the Caribbean, and the U.S. Atlantic coast, as the likelihood of a major hurricane making landfall is lower. However, experts warn that even during below-average seasons, significant storms can still develop, as seen in past years like 2015 with Hurricane Joaquin. Residents in hurricane-prone areas should remain vigilant and prepared, as the potential for impactful storms, though reduced, is not eliminated.
