• Whatcom County, Washington, has been awarded $3.99 million through FEMA’s Hazard Mitigation Grant Program to address the aftermath of severe flooding in November
• The funding will be used to acquire and demolish five residential structures in flood-prone areas, including Bellingham, Everson, Ferndale, and Lynden. These properties will be converted into deed-restricted green spaces to mitigate future flood risks. The 2021 floods caused widespread damage, with over 100,000 people under evacuation orders, 383 emergency rescues, and nearly 4,000 homes affected. Infrastructure damage in Whatcom County alone exceeded $23 million, including $2 million in road repairs. The funding is part of a broader federal effort to support disaster recovery and preparedness across the United States.

Why It's Important?

The 2021 floods had devastating impacts on Whatcom County, displacing thousands of residents and causing significant damage to homes, businesses, and infrastructure. The FEMA grant aims to reduce future risks by removing vulnerable structures and creating open green spaces. However, the community continues to face challenges in rebuilding and preparing for potential future disasters. The funding provides critical support for affected families and helps mitigate the long-term risks associated with living in flood-prone areas.
