Heavy Rain and Flash Flooding Threaten Oahu Amid First Alert Weather Day

A First Alert Weather Day has been declared for Oahu and other Hawaiian islands, excluding Kauai, due to the threat of heavy rain and potential flooding. The National Weather Service (NWS) in Honolulu has issued a Flood Watch for Oahu, Molokai, Lanai, Maui, and Hawaii Island, effective through 6 a.m. Saturday, May 16,
A flash flood warning for Oahu was extended until 6:15 p.m. on Friday, with radar indicating thunderstorms and heavy rain over central and leeward Oahu. Rainfall rates reached up to 2 inches per hour in some areas, causing road closures and localized flooding. The weather is being driven by an unseasonably cold upper-level low-pressure system moving over the islands, which is expected to weaken and drift eastward over the weekend.

Why It's Important?

The heavy rain and flash flooding pose significant risks to low-lying and flood-prone areas, including urban regions where rapid runoff could lead to property damage. Roads such as Kamehameha Highway at Waiahole Valley Road and Waikane Stream have already been closed due to flooding. Locations like Waipio, Wahiawa, Mililani, and Waianae are among those expected to experience flash flooding. Residents are advised to remain vigilant as thunderstorms and heavy showers continue to impact the region, potentially causing further disruptions and hazards.
