• Post-Tropical Cyclone Josephine has transitioned from a subtropical storm to an extratropical cyclone, as confirmed by the National Hurricane Center (NHC) on October 22,
• The system is currently moving northeast at 15 knots (approximately 17 mph or 27 km/h) and is expected to strengthen further tonight due to the influence of an amplifying mid- to upper-level trough over eastern Canada and the New England states. Winds are forecast to reach hurricane force, with maximum sustained winds of 65 knots (75 mph or 120 km/h) by early Friday morning. Josephine will continue to move away from the New England states, passing south of Nova Scotia and Newfoundland tonight and Saturday. The cyclone is predicted to steadily weaken after tonight and dissipate within 72 hours as it merges with a new low-pressure system developing to its northeast.

Impact & Risks

Josephine's transition to an extratropical cyclone brings the potential for hurricane-force winds, particularly in areas south of Nova Scotia and Newfoundland. Coastal regions in these areas may experience strong winds and rough seas, posing risks to maritime activities. The system is expected to move away from the New England states, reducing direct impacts there. However, residents in affected areas should remain vigilant for updates from local weather services and take necessary precautions against high winds and hazardous marine conditions.
