Real-Time Rainfall Detection Enhances Urban Flood Forecasting

• The Korea Institute of Civil Engineering and Building Technology (KICT) has developed an advanced Urban Flood Forecasting Platform to improve real-time detection of hazardous rainfall.
• This platform focuses on identifying linear rainbands and sudden localized torrential rainfall, which are major contributors to urban flooding.

Impact & Risks

The increasing frequency of extreme rainfall events poses a significant risk to urban areas, particularly those with limited drainage capacity. Linear rainbands and sudden torrential downpours can lead to flash floods, rapid water level rises, and dangerous currents, endangering lives and property. Urban areas like Gangnam and Kwanak in Seoul are particularly vulnerable to these events, which can cause flooding in low-lying areas, disrupt transportation, and result in property damage. The new Urban Flood Forecasting Platform aims to mitigate these risks by providing early detection and real-time monitoring, enabling faster response times and reducing potential impacts.
