Severe Thunderstorms and Tornado Risk for Chicago Area on Thursday
US · Published Jun 12, 2026
The Chicago area is bracing for another round of severe thunderstorms on Thursday, following damaging storms on Wednesday that caused widespread power outages and downed trees.
According to ABC7 Chicago, the Storm Prediction Center has placed much of the region under a Level 4 risk for severe weather, with parts of Northwest Indiana and Kankakee County under a Level 3 risk.

Why It's Important?

The severe weather poses significant risks to residents across the Chicago area, including Cook County, Northwest Indiana, and surrounding regions. Strong winds could cause further damage to trees and power lines, exacerbating existing outages. Tornadoes, if they occur, could lead to life-threatening conditions and structural damage. Large hail may also damage vehicles and property. The storms have already disrupted air travel, with over 600 flight cancellations reported at O'Hare Airport and delays at Midway Airport. Public events, including concerts and festivals, have been postponed or rescheduled due to safety concerns.
