Severe Thunderstorms Expected in Chicago with High Winds and Hail

The National Weather Service has issued severe thunderstorm warnings for northeastern Cook County, including Chicago, Evanston, Des Plaines, and Oak Lawn, as well as suburban areas like Aurora, Naperville, and Arlington Heights.
The storms are expected to bring wind gusts up to 70 mph, hail up to ping pong size, and heavy lightning.

Impact & Risks

The storms pose risks of property damage, including to roofs, siding, and trees, due to high winds and hail. Flooding and electrical hazards have also been reported, leading to the cancellation of major events like the Taste of Oak Brook and fireworks shows in Aurora and Wauconda. Air travel has been heavily impacted, with over 150 flight cancellations and more than 1,000 delays at O'Hare International Airport, alongside delays and cancellations at Midway Airport.
