Severe Storms Expected in KS, MO, and Southern Plains
US · Published Oct 13, 2026
• The National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center (SPC) has issued a slight risk of severe thunderstorms for parts of Kansas, northwest Missouri, and the Southern High Plains.
• These storms are expected to develop this afternoon and continue into the evening, fueled by a moist boundary layer and moderate buoyancy with MLCAPE values ranging from 1,500 to 2,500 J/kg.

Impact & Risks

The primary risks include large hail (up to 2.5 inches in diameter), severe wind gusts (60-80 mph), and isolated tornadoes. Areas most at risk are central Kansas, northwest Missouri, and the Southern High Plains, with additional isolated threats in southwest Texas and parts of New York. While the tornado risk is limited by modest low-level shear, the combination of a very moist boundary layer and strong wind dynamics could still lead to localized severe impacts.
