US · Published Oct 20, 2026
• A bipartisan group of US lawmakers introduced the United States-India Interparliamentary Group Act on October 20,
• The legislation aims to establish a formal mechanism for dialogue between the US Congress and India's Parliament. Proposed by Republican Congressman James Gallagher, along with Bill Huizenga, Mike Thompson, and Indian-American Shri Thanedar, the act seeks to create a permanent framework for discussions on trade, defense, technology, and other bilateral issues. The US Secretary of State would be required to initiate negotiations with the Indian government within 180 days of the law's enactment. The group would include 12 members of Congress, equally divided between the House and Senate, and meet annually with representatives from India's Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha.

Impact & Risks

The proposed legislation could strengthen US-India relations by institutionalizing parliamentary dialogue on key issues like trade, defense, and technology. This initiative may enhance bilateral cooperation and provide a platform for resolving disputes. However, the success of the proposal depends on mutual agreement between the two nations and the ability to address potential political and economic challenges.
