El Niño Conditions Strengthen, Expected to Intensify Through Winter 2026-27
US · Published Jun 13, 2026
El Niño conditions have developed and are expected to strengthen into the Northern Hemisphere winter of 2026-27, according to the Climate Prediction Center (CPC).
Sea surface temperatures (SSTs) in the central and eastern equatorial Pacific Ocean are above average, with the Niño-3.4 index currently at +0.7°C.

Why It's Important?

El Niño events can lead to significant global weather impacts, including altered precipitation patterns and temperature anomalies. Regions such as the southern United States may experience wetter-than-average conditions, while parts of Southeast Asia and Australia could face drier weather. Strong El Niño events, like the one forecasted, can amplify these effects, increasing the likelihood of extreme weather events such as flooding, droughts, and heatwaves. However, not all areas will experience the expected impacts, as local factors can influence outcomes.
