A late-season winter storm is forecasted to bring significant snowfall to parts of Montana and Wyoming, with the National Weather Service (NWS) in Billings issuing a winter storm warning for southern Montana and a winter weather advisory for areas spanning both states.
Snowfall totals are expected to range from 8 to 13 inches in higher elevations, particularly on north-facing slopes above 7,000 feet.
Gusty winds up to 30 mph may further reduce visibility, creating hazardous travel conditions.

Why It's Important?

The heavy snowfall and strong winds are expected to create dangerous conditions for travelers and outdoor enthusiasts in mountainous areas. Roads, including U.S. Route 14, may become slippery and hazardous, particularly during the morning and evening hours. Recreational activities in high-elevation areas could be significantly disrupted, with risks of avalanches and unstable terrain. In lower elevations, thunderstorms may bring erratic winds, small hail, and localized flooding. Residents in the Great Lakes region should also prepare for frost and freezing conditions, which could damage sensitive vegetation and outdoor plants.
