Heavy Rain and Flooding Threaten Southern and Eastern U.S. Over Memorial Day Weekend

A significant weather shift is expected to bring heavy rainfall and potential flooding to drought-stricken areas of the southern and eastern United States through the Memorial Day weekend.
According to The Washington Post, a developing El Niño in the Pacific Ocean is intensifying the jet stream, drawing in tropical moisture and fueling this wet weather pattern.
Rainfall amounts of 1 to 3 inches are forecast across a broad area from Texas to New York, with localized totals reaching up to 6 inches in parts of the South, particularly from Texas to Tennessee.

Why It's Important?

The heavy rainfall poses a significant risk of flash flooding, particularly in areas from Texas to the Carolinas and northward to Pennsylvania. Urban areas like Atlanta, which recently experienced flash flooding, are especially vulnerable. The rain may disrupt outdoor activities planned for the long weekend, with cities such as Dallas, Atlanta, and Washington, D.C., expected to see persistent showers and thunderstorms. While the rain is beneficial for alleviating drought conditions, it could lead to hazardous travel conditions, localized flooding, and delays in outdoor events.
