Severe Tornadoes and Winds Threaten Midwest with Level 4/5 Risk
US · Published Jun 16, 2026
Communities across the Midwest are bracing for another round of severe weather, just days after a series of tornadoes and damaging winds caused widespread destruction.
According to FOX Weather, a Level 4 out of 5 severe storm risk has been issued for Wednesday, targeting north-central Illinois and western Indiana.

Why It's Important?

The severe weather poses significant risks to millions across the Midwest, particularly in Illinois and Indiana. Communities in the Level 4 risk zone could face intense tornadoes, wind gusts exceeding 80 mph, and hail up to 2.5 inches in diameter. The Storm Prediction Center has also issued a Level 3 risk for areas including Kansas City, St. Louis, and Chicago, with a broader Level 2 risk extending to cities like Louisville, Indianapolis, and Columbus. The combination of wind shear and unstable atmospheric conditions increases the likelihood of discrete supercells capable of producing long-track tornadoes. Residents in these areas should prepare for potential power outages, property damage, and hazardous travel conditions.
