Tropical Storm Lala, which was downgraded from a Category 1 hurricane, is causing significant impacts across Hawaii.
The storm made its initial impact on the Big Island on Saturday, August 15, 2026, before moving west-northwest toward Maui and Oahu.

Impact & Risks

The storm has already caused significant damage, including the destruction of two homes in Naalehu on the Big Island and widespread power outages affecting over 200,000 residents. Flash flooding and mudslides pose a severe risk to life and property, particularly in low-lying and mountainous areas. High winds have downed power lines, and dangerous surf conditions are making coastal areas hazardous. At least one fatality has been reported due to a car accident near South Point. The storm's impacts are expected to persist as it moves across the island chain (USA Today, 16 Aug 2026).
