The wildfires have had a profound impact on the Spokane community, with 169 students and 38 staff members from Spokane public schools, as well as 20 students from the Nine Mile Falls school district, losing their homes. Families have faced significant challenges, including displacement, trauma, and loss of basic necessities. Children, in particular, have experienced emotional distress, with some reporting night terrors and heightened anxiety. The camps aim to mitigate these risks by providing a safe space for children to process their experiences, engage in routine activities, and receive trauma-informed care. However, the long-term recovery process for both the community and the affected children will require sustained support.
