Lake Powell, a critical reservoir on the Utah-Arizona border that provides water and hydroelectric power to millions, has reached its lowest level ever recorded. On August 15, 2026, the lake's surface dropped to 3,519.91 feet above sea level, as reported by the Bureau of Reclamation. The ongoing drought in the western United States, exacerbated by climate change, has significantly reduced snowpack in the Rocky Mountains, which feeds the Colorado River and, in turn, Lake Powell. Federal officials have been releasing water from smaller upstream reservoirs to delay the lake from reaching 3,490 feet, the critical threshold below which the Glen Canyon Dam can no longer generate electricity.
