Heavy Snow Warning Issued for Montana and Wyoming Amid Late-Season Storm
US · Published May 21, 2026
A late-season winter storm is forecasted to bring significant snowfall to parts of Montana and Wyoming, with some mountainous areas expected to receive over a foot of snow.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Billings, a winter storm warning is in effect for the Absaroka and Beartooth Mountains in Montana, where snow accumulations could range from 8 to 13 inches.
A winter weather advisory has also been issued for the Pryor/Northern Bighorn Mountains in Montana and the Northeast Bighorn Mountains in Wyoming, with expected snow totals of 5 to 10 inches.

Why It's Important?

The heavy snowfall and strong winds are expected to create hazardous conditions, particularly in mountainous areas above 7,000 feet. Travel in these regions, including U.S. Route 14, may become difficult due to slippery roads and reduced visibility. Recreational activities in the high country could also be disrupted, with risks of avalanches and unstable terrain. Lower elevations may face localized flooding from rain and thunderstorms, along with gusty and erratic winds. Residents and travelers are advised to prepare for rapidly changing weather conditions and potential delays.
