While most tornadoes have been weaker, with 49 rated EF1 and 19 rated EF0, the area has also experienced 22 EF2, 8 EF3, and 2 EF4 tornadoes. The deadliest event, an EF4 in 2011, caused 22 fatalities and extensive damage. The costliest tornado occurred on March 24, 1975, when an F3 tornado caused $275 million in property damage. Residents should remain vigilant, especially during April, the peak month for tornado activity.
