Paddy Stubble Burning Cases Drop by 27% Across Seven States
IN · Published Nov 2, 2026
• Paddy stubble burning incidents across seven Indian states have decreased by 26.63% between 15 September and 1 November 2026, according to data from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR).
• A total of 3,316 cases were reported during this period, with Punjab accounting for nearly half of the incidents (1,514 cases).

Impact & Risks

The reduction in stubble burning incidents is a positive development for air quality in northern India, particularly in regions like Punjab, Haryana, and Delhi, which often experience severe air pollution during this period. However, the practice still poses significant environmental and health risks, including the release of harmful pollutants that contribute to smog and respiratory issues. The concentration of cases in specific districts, such as Amritsar, Ferozepur, and Kapurthala in Punjab, highlights the need for targeted interventions in these areas to further mitigate the impact.
