• The Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) has issued notices to senior officials in Amritsar and Tarn Taran districts of Punjab regarding stubble burning incidents during the ongoing paddy harvesting season. These districts have been identified as hotspots for stubble burning, which significantly contributes to air pollution in northern India, particularly affecting Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR). The CAQM has intensified field-level monitoring and deployed flying squads in Punjab and Haryana to curb the practice. Officials have been directed to submit their responses by 21 October
• The Commission has also urged the Punjab government to implement a state-specific action plan to address the issue effectively.

Impact & Risks

Stubble burning in Punjab poses a severe risk to air quality in northern India, especially in Delhi and the NCR. The practice releases harmful pollutants, exacerbating respiratory and environmental health issues. The situation is particularly concerning during the paddy harvesting season, as the smoke from burning stubble contributes to smog and reduced visibility. The CAQM has highlighted the need for immediate action to mitigate these risks and prevent further deterioration of air quality in the region.
