• India is experiencing significant dry and drought conditions as the southwest monsoon begins its withdrawal.
• Between June 1 and September 22, 2026, the country received 706.9 mm of rainfall, which is 15% below the normal of 832.4 mm, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

Impact & Risks

The widespread drought conditions are severely impacting agriculture, with 55-60% of India's net sown area being rainfed. Kharif crops, which are at critical growth stages, are particularly vulnerable, with a decline of 16.05 lakh hectares in sown area compared to last year. States like Karnataka, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, and Maharashtra have reported significant reductions in paddy cultivation. The drought is also expected to affect rabi crops, as residual soil moisture and reservoir levels may not be sufficient for the next cropping season. Persistent dry conditions could lead to reduced yields and heightened food security concerns.
