Cyclone Alerts: How to Enable Phone Notifications
IN · Published Oct 28, 2026
• India has implemented a nationwide disaster alert system to provide real-time warnings for cyclones, floods, heatwaves, and other hazards directly to mobile phones.
• This system, based on the Common Alerting Protocol (CAP), uses SMS and Cell Broadcast technology to ensure alerts reach affected areas even without internet access.

Impact & Risks

The disaster alert system is designed to save lives by providing timely warnings about extreme weather events. Cyclone Arnab, for instance, prompted alerts to 2.7 crore mobile phones in Andhra Pradesh, helping residents prepare for potential impacts. However, users must enable emergency alert settings on their devices to receive these notifications. Without proper configuration, critical warnings may be missed, increasing the risk of harm during disasters. Vulnerable populations, such as those in cyclone-prone areas, are particularly at risk if alerts are not received or acted upon promptly.
