The accelerated melting of Thwaites Glacier could lead to a sea level rise of over 2 feet (60 cm) if it collapses entirely, with the potential to unlock further ice loss from the Antarctic ice sheet, resulting in up to 10 feet (3 metres) of sea level rise. This would have devastating consequences for coastal communities globally, including those in India, such as Mumbai and Kolkata, which are already vulnerable to flooding. The study also warns of increased coastal flooding risks in the coming decades, even with the projected 1.2-inch rise by 2100. The unpinning of the glacier from underwater ridges could further accelerate its retreat.
