Heat-Related Deaths Decline, but Vulnerable Groups Remain at Risk
US · Published Jun 6, 2026
New data reveals a decline in heat-related deaths across the United States, with 1,837 fatalities reported last year compared to approximately 2,400 in each of the previous two years.
Despite this improvement, certain populations, including individuals over 85 years old and Indigenous communities, remain at heightened risk.

Why It's Important?

Older adults, Indigenous populations, and those without access to cooling resources are most vulnerable to heat-related illnesses and fatalities. Prolonged exposure to high temperatures can lead to heat exhaustion or heat stroke, which can be life-threatening if untreated. Communities in the Southwest, where heat-related deaths are most prevalent, face additional challenges due to limited disaster relief funding for heat mitigation.
