The extreme weather conditions are not only reducing tea yields but also driving workers away from the industry. Many workers are leaving for more stable and better-paying jobs, leading to a labour shortage that affects productivity and quality. This is particularly concerning as Assam's tea industry supports around 700,000 plantation workers and 140,000 small tea growers. The departure of experienced workers has led to a reliance on temporary labour and mechanical harvesting, which can further reduce the quality of tea. The combination of climate change impacts and economic pressures is creating a downward spiral, threatening the livelihoods of thousands of families dependent on the tea industry.
