Heavy Rainfall Forecast in Northeast India; Heatwave in Western Regions
IN · Published Sep 9, 2026
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted widespread rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds across Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Sikkim, and northeast India this week.
Heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected in these regions, with isolated areas in Assam, Meghalaya, and Sub-Himalayan West Bengal experiencing extremely heavy rainfall.

Impact & Risks

The heavy rainfall in northeast India, including Assam and Meghalaya, poses risks of localised flooding, landslides, and waterlogging. Thunderstorms and gusty winds may disrupt transportation and power supply in affected areas. In contrast, heatwave conditions in Vidarbha and West Rajasthan could lead to heat-related illnesses, particularly for vulnerable populations such as the elderly and outdoor workers.
