Study reveals Northeast India faces extreme rainfall and prolonged dry spells

A 52-year study of India's climate extremes has highlighted significant changes in the monsoon patterns of Northeast India. The research, conducted by scientists from the India Meteorological Department (IMD) and the National Centre for Medium Range Weather Forecasting (NCMRWF), found a statistically significant increase in extreme one-day rainfall events in the region between 1971 and
Simultaneously, the frequency of dry spells and drought conditions has also risen. The study, titled 'Evolution of Climate Extremes Over the Indian Subcontinent Using a Revised CEI', was published in the International Journal of Climatology. Researchers attribute these changes to factors such as a warming Bay of Bengal, increased atmospheric moisture, and the region's complex terrain.

Impact & Risks

The combination of heavier downpours and longer dry spells poses significant challenges for Northeast India, which includes states like Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, Arunachal Pradesh, and Sikkim. These extremes could exacerbate existing issues such as floods and water stress, impacting agriculture, infrastructure, and local communities. The study warns that regional averages may obscure localised extremes, which are critical in driving flood and drought risks. The findings call for urgent measures to address these challenges, including improved flood preparedness and better management of rainfall variability.
