Global Astrophotography Highlights: Stunning Milky Way Images for 2026
CL · Published May 18, 2026
Capture the Atlas has released its 2026 Milky Way Photographer of the Year collection, featuring 25 breathtaking images of the galaxy captured under pristine dark skies worldwide.
This annual project, now in its ninth year, celebrates astrophotography and promotes the preservation of dark skies.
The 2026 edition received over 6,500 submissions, the highest in its history, with photographers from 15 nationalities contributing.

Why It's Important?

The images underscore the impact of light pollution on the visibility of the night sky, a growing environmental concern. As urbanization expands, fewer locations remain where the Milky Way can be observed in its full glory. This poses risks to both cultural heritage and scientific research, as well as to the burgeoning field of astrotourism. The collection serves as a reminder of the need to protect dark skies for future generations, as many of the featured locations are becoming increasingly rare due to encroaching artificial light.
