US · Published Jul 29, 2026
Georgia is experiencing a surge of dangerous summer heat, with a Heat Advisory in effect for metro Atlanta and much of north Georgia on Tuesday, July 28,
The advisory is active from noon to 8 p.m. due to a combination of high temperatures and humidity, which are expected to push heat index values between 105°F and 111°F (40.6°C to 43.9°C). Cities such as Augusta and Savannah are forecasted to experience the highest heat index values, reaching 111°F (43.9°C) and 110°F (43.3°C), respectively. Actual air temperatures will range from 91°F (32.8°C) in Blue Ridge to near 100°F (37.8°C) in Augusta. The National Weather Service warns that the high humidity will exacerbate the heat, making outdoor activities potentially hazardous.

Impact & Risks

The extreme heat poses significant health risks, particularly for those spending prolonged periods outdoors. High humidity reduces the body's ability to cool itself through sweating, increasing the likelihood of heat-related illnesses such as heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Symptoms to watch for include high body temperature, dizziness, nausea, and confusion. Vulnerable populations, including the elderly, children, and those with pre-existing health conditions, are at heightened risk. Residents in cities like Augusta and Savannah, where the heat index is expected to peak, should exercise extra caution.
