A flash flood warning is in effect for parts of metro Atlanta, including eastern Fulton and west-central DeKalb counties, as heavy thunderstorms have already dropped 2 to 3 inches of rain. The National Weather Service (NWS) issued the warning, which remains active until 11:15 p.m. EDT on May 20,
Flash flooding has been reported along the I-75/I-85 corridor near downtown Atlanta, with live footage showing inundated streets and ramps. The storm is slow-moving, exacerbating the risk of flooding in urban areas with poor runoff. More than 437,000 residents, along with 14 hospitals and 55 schools, are within the affected area. Additional rainfall of up to 1 inch is expected as the storm lingers, increasing the potential for dangerous runoff.

Why It's Important?

The flash flooding poses significant risks to urban areas, including Midtown, Grant Park, Virginia Highland, and West End. Rising water levels have overtopped streets, underpasses, and low-lying neighborhoods, creating life-threatening conditions. The NWS has emphasized the danger of driving through flooded roads, as most flood-related fatalities occur in vehicles. The dense urban environment, combined with heavy rainfall, has led to poor drainage and rapid water accumulation, heightening the risk for residents and infrastructure in the area.
