Meteorological experts are observing the simultaneous presence of two significant climate patterns: El Niño in the Pacific and Atlantic Niña in the Atlantic.
El Niño, characterized by unusually warm Pacific Ocean surface temperatures, is predicted to be up to 6.5°F (3.6°C) above average, potentially making it the strongest on record.

Impact & Risks

The combined effects of El Niño and Atlantic Niña are expected to significantly reduce the number of storms and hurricanes this season. Forecasts from Colorado State University predict only nine storms, with four becoming hurricanes and just one reaching Category 3 or higher. This is notably below the seasonal average. While this reduction may lower the risk of widespread hurricane damage, isolated storms like Tropical Storm Arthur, which caused flash flooding and tornadoes, still pose localized threats. Coastal and southern regions should remain vigilant despite the overall quieter season.
