2026 Hurricane Season Outlook: El Niño May Lead to Below-Normal Activity
US · Published Jun 2, 2026
The 2026 Atlantic hurricane season, which runs from June 1 to November 30, is forecasted to be less active than usual, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).
This outlook is influenced by the emergence of El Niño, a climate pattern that typically suppresses hurricane activity in the Atlantic.
NOAA predicts up to 14 named storms, with three to six becoming hurricanes and one to three reaching major hurricane status.

Why It's Important?

While Augusta, Georgia, is inland, tropical systems can still bring heavy rain, flash flooding, and power outages to the area. Warmer ocean temperatures, linked to climate change, may contribute to stronger storms and heavier rainfall, increasing the potential for localized impacts. Residents are urged to remain vigilant and prepared, as the seasonal outlook does not eliminate the risk of severe weather.
