Flood Watches Issued Across 12 States Amid Heavy Rain Threat
US · Published May 27, 2026
Flood watches have been issued across at least 12 states in the U.S., with forecasters warning of heavy rain and potential flash flooding.
The National Weather Service (NWS) has highlighted areas from Texas to the Mid-Atlantic as being at risk due to slow-moving weather systems producing repeated downpours.
Rainfall totals are expected to range from 1 to 8 inches in various regions, with localized flooding likely in urban and low-lying areas.

Why It's Important?

The heavy rainfall poses risks of flash flooding, particularly in urban areas, low-lying regions, and near rivers and creeks. In Texas, life-threatening flooding is possible, especially in the Austin and San Antonio corridor. The Gulf Coast and Lower Mississippi Valley are also at risk, with localized totals of up to 8 inches of rain. In the Ohio Valley and Appalachians, recent rainfall has primed soils, increasing the likelihood of rapid runoff and rising waterways. Structural flooding, impassable roads, and dangerous conditions are expected in several areas, including New Orleans and coastal communities.
