Flash Flood Threat in Arizona and Southern Utah
US · Published Oct 22, 2026
• Heavy rainfall is expected to impact central and northern Arizona as well as southern Utah, posing a flash flood threat through the morning hours.
• According to the National Weather Service's Weather Prediction Center (WPC), convection is streaming northward across these areas, driven by a plume of deep tropical moisture ahead of a mid/upper-level low moving into California.

Impact & Risks

The flash flood threat is considered isolated to scattered, with the potential for locally significant impacts in sensitive areas such as slot canyons, complex terrain, and drainage basins. Antecedent rainfall over the past 24 hours has left the ground increasingly saturated, heightening the risk of flash flooding even with quick-moving storms. Areas between Phoenix and Flagstaff in Arizona are particularly vulnerable to training convection, which could produce rainfall rates exceeding 1 inch per hour. Southern Utah may also experience flash flooding, though at slightly lower hourly rates.
