• Cyclone Arnab, currently over the Bay of Bengal, is expected to intensify into a very severe cyclonic storm before making landfall on October
• The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast maximum sustained winds of 115-125 kmph, gusting to 140 kmph, during landfall between Bapatla and Visakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh. Coastal districts in Andhra Pradesh and Odisha are under red and orange rainfall warnings, with extremely heavy rainfall expected in low-lying areas. Tamil Nadu, already experiencing heavy northeast monsoon rainfall, is not directly in the cyclone's path but may see residual effects.

Impact & Risks

The cyclone poses significant risks to coastal Andhra Pradesh and Odisha, including flooding, waterlogging, and damage to infrastructure. A storm surge of 1 to 1.5 metres above astronomical tide is expected, particularly in East Godavari district and Yanam. Landslides are possible in hilly areas of Odisha, and strong winds may disrupt power and communication lines. Tamil Nadu may experience additional rainfall, exacerbating existing waterlogging and landslides in affected districts.
