NCMC Reviews Cyclone Preparedness in Bay of Bengal
IN · Published Oct 27, 2026
• The National Crisis Management Committee (NCMC), chaired by the Cabinet Secretary, convened a high-level meeting to assess the preparedness of central and state agencies for an impending cyclone in the Bay of Bengal.
• The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued warnings in four stages: Cyclone Watch, Cyclone Alert, Cyclone Warning, and Post-Landfall Outlook.

Impact & Risks

The Bay of Bengal region is highly prone to cyclones, which can cause significant loss of life and property. Cyclones with wind speeds exceeding 118 km/h are classified as Very Severe Cyclonic Storms by the IMD. Vulnerable coastal communities, including farmers, fishermen, and residents in low-lying areas, face risks from strong winds, heavy rainfall, and storm surges. The NCMC's review aims to ensure that disaster management plans are activated and resources are pre-positioned to minimise the impact of the impending cyclone.
