The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has announced that a low-pressure area is likely to develop over the Bay of Bengal on Saturday, 29 August 2026, under the influence of a prevailing cyclonic circulation.
This system has already caused widespread rainfall across Odisha in the past 24 hours, with Khaira in Balasore recording the highest rainfall at 96 mm.

Impact & Risks

The heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected to impact several districts in Odisha, including Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, and Balasore, which are under an Orange Alert. The remaining districts are under a Yellow Alert, indicating the possibility of significant rainfall. The rough sea conditions pose a risk to fishermen, who have been advised to avoid venturing into the sea. The heavy rains may lead to waterlogging, disruption of daily activities, and potential damage to crops and infrastructure in affected areas.
