Low Pressure Likely Over Bay of Bengal Around October 13: IMD
IN · Published Oct 9, 2026
• The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has announced that a low-pressure area is likely to form over the southeast Bay of Bengal around 13 October
• This development is attributed to an active cyclonic circulation over the Gulf of Thailand and its surrounding areas, which extends up to 7.6 km above mean sea level. The system is expected to move into the Andaman Sea by 11 October, leading to the formation of the low-pressure area. Concurrently, the withdrawal of the southwest monsoon has commenced in Odisha, with parts of Bargarh, Jharsuguda, and Sundargarh districts already experiencing its retreat.

Impact & Risks

The formation of a low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal could potentially lead to increased rainfall and rough sea conditions in the region. Coastal areas of Odisha and neighbouring states may experience heightened weather activity, including strong winds and heavy rainfall, depending on the system's development. Fishermen and maritime operators in the Bay of Bengal and Andaman Sea are advised to remain cautious as the system evolves. The withdrawal of the southwest monsoon may also impact agricultural activities in eastern India.
