Maharashtra drought worsens with 18% monsoon deficit, Beed hit hardest

• Maharashtra is grappling with a severe drought, with 304 out of 358 tehsils declared drought-hit following an 18% monsoon rainfall deficit.
• Beed district has been particularly affected, recording a 37% deficit, the worst in a decade.

Impact & Risks

The drought is severely affecting farmers, cattle breeders, and labourers in Maharashtra. Reduced crop yields, such as stunted sugarcane and cotton, are leading to financial losses and food shortages. The sugarcane harvest season is expected to be halved, impacting sugar factories and seasonal labourers. Rising fodder prices and water scarcity are making it difficult for farmers to sustain their livestock. The financial strain has led to an increase in farmer suicides, with 153 cases reported in Beed district this year alone.
