• Karnataka has experienced a 32% rainfall deficit during the Southwest Monsoon season, marking the highest shortfall since 1918, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
• The state received only 563.7mm of rainfall between 1st June and 30th September, compared to the normal 831.8mm.

Impact & Risks

The significant rainfall deficit has raised concerns about water availability and agricultural productivity in Karnataka, particularly in South-Interior Karnataka. Farmers in the region may face challenges due to reduced soil moisture and water scarcity for irrigation. The deficit could also impact drinking water supplies and hydroelectric power generation in the state.
