Cyclonic storm forecast raises concerns for Odisha farmers

• Farmers in Odisha's Ganjam district are bracing for potential crop damage as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasts heavy rain and strong winds due to a developing cyclonic storm in the Bay of Bengal. The low-pressure system over the east-central and adjoining southeast Bay of Bengal is expected to intensify into a cyclonic storm by the morning of 26 October
• Southern Odisha, including Ganjam, is likely to experience heavy rainfall under its influence. Paddy crops, currently in the milking stage, are particularly vulnerable to damage from heavy rain and strong winds, which could cause the crops to fall and result in significant losses.

Impact & Risks

Farmers in Ganjam district are deeply concerned about the potential impact on their paddy crops, which are at a critical growth stage. Heavy rain and strong winds could lead to widespread crop damage, especially for long-duration paddy varieties. The district has already suffered significant agricultural losses earlier this month due to heavy rain and flooding, with 33% crop loss reported across 3,402 hectares, amounting to Rs 5.41 crore in damages. The fresh cyclone prediction has heightened fears of further losses, particularly for farmers who transplanted paddy late this year.
