• On 26 August 2026, a catastrophic flood struck the Bhote Koshi Valley in Nepal, near the Rasuwagadhi area, affecting local residents and foreign pilgrims, including many Indians travelling to Mount Kailash in Tibet.
• The disaster is believed to have been triggered by the collapse of a glacier-covered section of Langtang Lirung, a peak on the Nepal-Tibet border.

Impact & Risks

The flood has devastated communities in the Bhote Koshi Valley, displacing thousands and leaving many families grieving for lost loved ones. Pilgrims, including Indian nationals, were among the victims, highlighting the vulnerability of those travelling to sacred sites in the region. The disaster underscores the risks posed by glacial lake outburst floods and unstable mountain slopes, which are exacerbated by climate change. Local infrastructure, including roads and villages built near rivers, remains highly susceptible to such events, increasing the likelihood of future tragedies.
