• The Odisha government is preparing a draft standard operating procedure (SOP) and a long-term action plan to reduce lightning-related deaths and damage in the state. The initiative, titled 'Lightning-Safe Odisha: 2027 Action Plan and 2027-2030 Roadmap,' will be developed during a two-day national workshop on lightning safety in Bhubaneswar on 15 and 16 October
• The workshop will bring together experts, researchers, disaster management professionals, and government representatives to discuss measures for improving lightning detection, forecasting, and emergency response. The focus will also include defining warning levels, assigning departmental responsibilities, and creating measurable indicators to monitor implementation.

Impact & Risks

Lightning strikes pose a significant risk to vulnerable communities in Odisha, particularly farmers, outdoor workers, and students. The initiative aims to reduce casualties and property damage by improving forecasting accuracy and emergency response mechanisms. Lightning-prone areas will be mapped, and affordable shelters will be explored to protect at-risk populations. The plan also seeks to enhance communication of safety warnings to ensure timely action by communities.
