Real-Time Monitoring Enhances Safety at Arunachal Pradesh Dams

• The Kameng Hydroelectric Power Project (KaHPS) in Arunachal Pradesh, India, has implemented an advanced real-time monitoring system to ensure the safety and efficiency of its two dams, Bichom and Tenga.
• The system, developed by Campbell Scientific India in collaboration with NEEPCO, includes vibrating wire sensors, V-notch seepage monitoring systems, plumb line assemblies, automated weather stations (AWS), and automatic water level recorders (AWLR).

Impact & Risks

The implementation of this monitoring system significantly reduces the risks associated with dam operations in the ecologically sensitive and seismically active Himalayan region. By providing real-time data on uplift pressure, seepage, structural displacement, and weather conditions, the system allows for proactive maintenance and early intervention, minimising the likelihood of critical failures. This is particularly crucial for the safety of nearby communities and the uninterrupted generation of 600 MW of hydroelectric power. The system also enhances operational efficiency by reducing the need for frequent manual inspections, which are challenging in the remote and rugged terrain.
