El Niño Brings Wetter, Milder Winter to Northeast
El Niño Brings Wetter, Milder Winter to Northeast
US · Published Oct 21, 2026
• The NOAA Climate Prediction Center has confirmed that a strong El Niño event is developing for the 2026-27 winter season, with a greater than 90% chance of it persisting through fall and winter (Orkin, 20 Oct 2026).
• This weather pattern is expected to bring above-normal temperatures to much of the Northeast and wetter-than-normal conditions along the Atlantic Coast.

Impact & Risks

The wetter and milder conditions associated with El Niño could lead to increased pest activity in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic regions. Rodents like house mice and Norway rats may seek shelter indoors during cold snaps and storms, while ticks could remain active during warmer periods. Moisture-loving pests such as camel crickets and silverfish may thrive in damp basements and crawlspaces. Overwintering insects like stink bugs and cluster flies may also become more visible during warm spells. These pests can cause structural damage, spread diseases, and create general discomfort for homeowners.
