162 Million Under Heat Alerts as U.S. Faces Holiday Heat Wave and Wildfires
US · Published Jun 30, 2026
An intense heat wave is set to impact much of the United States during the July Fourth holiday week, with around 162 million people under heat alerts across 35 states.
Temperatures are expected to climb into the upper 90s and 100s °F (32-38 °C), with heat index values reaching 105-115 °F (40-46 °C).

Impact & Risks

The heat wave poses significant risks of heat-related illnesses, particularly for vulnerable populations such as the elderly, children, and those without access to air conditioning. Prolonged exposure to high temperatures can lead to dehydration, heat exhaustion, or heat stroke. In Chicago, heat index values are forecast to reach 100-110 °F (38-43 °C) through Wednesday. Wildfires in the West have already claimed the lives of three firefighters and injured two others, with the Cottonwood Fire in Utah burning over 93,000 acres. Elevated fire risks persist across the Four Corners region, increasing the potential for further property damage and air quality issues.
