Brookline Parents Raise Concerns Over Hot Playground Surfaces Amid High Temperatures

Parents in Brookline, Massachusetts, are voicing concerns about dangerously high temperatures on playground surfaces at the Driscoll School.
Nicole McClelland, a parent, reported surface temperatures reaching 130°F to 150°F (54°C to 66°C) on slides, obstacles, and ground areas.

Why It's Important?

The extreme heat on playground surfaces poses a significant risk of burns to children and staff. According to the CPSC, burns can occur on hot slides, swings, and rubber surfaces, even when air temperatures are as low as 74°F (23°C). The lack of shade exacerbates the problem, creating unsafe conditions for outdoor play. Parents are particularly concerned about the year-round use of the playground for school and community programs, including summer camps. Without immediate intervention, the risk of injuries remains high, especially during sunny and warm weather.
