A recent study highlights the potential global weather impacts of a weakening Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC), a critical ocean current system.
Researchers, including UC Riverside's Mohima Sultana Mimi, have observed that the AMOC, which redistributes heat by moving warm water northward and cold water southward, is slowing down.

The weakening AMOC could significantly impact California by intensifying atmospheric rivers, which are already known for delivering heavy precipitation. While these systems can help alleviate drought conditions and replenish reservoirs, stronger atmospheric rivers—categorized as Category 3 to Category 5—pose serious risks. These include frequent flooding, flash floods, extreme precipitation, and heavy snowfall, all of which could disrupt communities and infrastructure. The study underscores the importance of monitoring these changes, as the intensity and landfall of such storms remain challenging to predict.
