The Swift Observatory, valued at hundreds of millions of dollars, is at risk of becoming inoperable if it continues to lose altitude. Its scientific instruments have already been turned off to slow its descent. Failure to save Swift would result in the loss of a critical tool for observing astronomical events, as NASA currently lacks the budget to replace it. Additionally, the success of this mission could pave the way for future space repair operations, including potential life-extending missions for other observatories like Hubble.
