The Carmel area has faced significant risks from tornadoes, with 35 fatalities recorded across four events since 1950 (VORTEX, 2026). While most tornadoes have been weaker, with 33 rated EF0 and 57 rated EF1, the area has also experienced 35 EF2, 7 EF3, and 2 EF4 tornadoes. The deadliest event, an F4 in 1965, caused 28 fatalities. The costliest tornado, an EF2 in 2008, caused $29.25 million in property damage. Residents should remain vigilant, especially during June, the peak month for tornado activity.
